What is an AED?

AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators) are small, lightweight devices that look at a person’s heart rhythm using special pads placed on the torso and can recognize ventricular fibrillation (VF), also known as “sudden cardiac arrest” or SCA. If SCA is present, the AED will advise of this and will talk the responder through some very simple steps to defibrillate. AED’s are designed to be used by lay rescuers or “first responders”.

Are there limits regarding who the AED can be used on?

Typically, children over 55 lbs (25kg) or 8 years of age are defibrillated as adults. AED defibrillation is appropriate for both children and adults, as long as the proper pads are used.

Does AED take the place of CPR?

No. The AED is part of CPR. For maximum results (i.e. the best chance of survival) you should use the two tools together.

Is there a liability issue?

No, per 1999 Wisconsin Act 7, Bill 239, an act relating to the limitations on and requirements for use of semi-automated defibrillators by individuals other than emergency medical technicians and first responders defibrillation, providing civil immunity for their use and requiring the Department of Health and Family Services to review training courses for their use.
